Kent Island Elementary School is located in a rural setting in Queen Anne's County. The school opened in September 1956. It served as an elementary school for students in grades one through six. It was the first school to service all students of elementary age on the island in one facility. In September 1966, the facility housed grades one through four with the opening of Stevensville Middle School and Queen Anne's County High School.

Over the years Kent Island Elementary has been renovated several times. The use of self contained educational units has been required several times and they are again in use at this time. In 1991, a second building was opened, and Kent Island Elementary became two buildings. The newer building housed second grade through fourth grade, and the older building housed grades kindergarten through second grade.

Kent Island Elementary became kindergarten, first and second grade when Bayside Elementary was established. In 1995, fifth grade was moved back to the elementary school and Kent Island then housed pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, first and second grade students.

In 2007 Kent Island Elementary went under another major renovation. All second grade teachers and students were moved to Bayside Elementary. Kent Island Elementary now houses Pre-School, Pre-K, Kindergarten, and First Grade.

The 2008-2009 school year will also be a year of renovation for KIES. The new wing will open and it will hold Pre-School, Pre-K, and kindergarten. The large white portable will hold First Grade and some special area teachers.

KIES is scheduled to be completed by the 2009-2010 school year.
